Beer Can Designs

For this project, I was tasked with designing beer cans that connect to something uniquely tied to Ottawa. Since I chose Conspiracy Theory Brewing Company as my subject, I wanted the concept to align with the brand’s mysterious and playful vibe. That’s why I decided to feature locations in Ottawa that are rumored to be haunted. It felt like the perfect thematic fit!

Creative Process

Can We Design It? Yes We Can!!

Beer—what’s not to love, right? And what’s even more exciting is getting the chance to design your own beer can! There are so many creative directions you can take, from photo manipulation to custom illustrations and everything in between. I’ve always wanted to try my hand at label design, and through my program, I finally got the opportunity. Here’s a look at how I arrived at my final design!

Step 01

Concept Ideas

WEST WING WHISPERS This can design was inspired by the ghost stories of Ottawa. I wanted to bring real stories to life through the design by focusing on the exhibits at the Nature Museum and the ghostly figure rumored to haunt the west wing of the building.

MILLER'S FRIGHT Inspired by the Watson Mill ghost story, this can design captures the spooky yet peaceful vibe of the structure. I wanted to evoke an eerie feeling with the image of the lady in the window and the stormy atmosphere.

Step 02

Designing In Photoshop

Since these buildings are based in Ottawa, I took the opportunity to visit them in person and capture my own photos to use in the label design. I wanted to evoke a sense of mystery and eeriness, so I used those images as the foundation and layered in additional elements in Photoshop. The goal was to blend the haunted history of each location with the visual design, creating a label that not only looks intriguing but also tells a story.

Step 03

Making It Legible

Creating a design with a darker vibe is one thing, but making sure it's legible and easy to read is another challenge entirely. I ran into some difficulty finding the right balance between those two elements during the design process. However, once I found the perfect combination of colors and typography, it really made the labels stand out. Since the overall layout had a darker tone, the type added an extra layer of vibrancy and mystery, giving it that finishing touch.

Step 04

The Finished Product

I’m really happy with how the end result turned out, it checks off all the boxes I had hoped for and looks fantastic on the can! The design came together just the way I envisioned, and seeing it in its final form was incredibly satisfying.
